All'interno del CD figurano dodici brani originali (tutte improvvisazioni) figli della feracità compositiva del clarinettista e del pianista. Il climax di Improvisation I (dedicated to Hildegard of Bingen) è ascetico. L'eloquio di Mariottini (al clarinetto basso) è profondamente ispirato, ponderato nota per nota con saviezza e nobiltà d'animo. Le costruzioni armoniche di Improvisation III (dedicated to Paul Bley), cesellate dalla sapienti mani di Battaglia, sono ipnotiche, tensive. Qui il pianista intesse un playing intriso di un maliardo bluesy mood. In Improvisation VII (dedicated to Valentin Silvestrov) l'atmosfera è avvolgente, riscaldante. Il duo cura magistralmente la dinamica dando vita a flussi sonori assai intensi, pervasivi, oltre a creare sfumature timbriche e colori che lasciano con il fiato sospeso. "Music For Clarinets And Piano" è un album dai tratti crepuscolari, in cui si va all-in su un interplay ricco ed erudito, dove Mariottini e Battaglia sono illuminati e guidati da un'estrosità autentica. Un album, questo, tendente all'introspezione, a un'ammirevole ricerca interiore che scaturisce da tre componenti fondamentali come maturità artistica, spiccata personalità e identità interpretativa.

Battaglia is a rare artist who plays with fearless freedom and meaningful precision. A strong case can be made that the best European Jazz is coming out of Italy. The seven albums that Stefano Battaglia has made for ECM contain the strongest work released by an ECM pianist during the last fifteen years.

Battaglia has been compared to Keith Jarrett and Cecil Taylor, and has devoted recordings to the music of Bill Evans. At this stage of his career, such comparisons are less a matter of stylistic derivation than suggestions of the pianistic quality of his work, he is simply one of the beautiful pianists in the world, with the same amalgam of precision and sonority, delicecy and strenght, that distinguishes the best of italian pianists, whether classical (Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Aldo Ciccolini, and above all, Maurizio Pollini) or jazz (Enrico Pieranunzi).
